Swapping Links

Swapping links is a secondary method to directory submissions. Because directory submissions are one-way links, they have more importance, however don’t over look swapping links.

When you swap links, you are looking for companies or websites that compliment yours. A good example would be, a camping equipment website would look to swap links with a website promoting camping lodges or travel packages into the wilderness.

If someone is on a camping lodge rental site, there is a good chance they may also be looking for camping equipment.

Try to find sites with a high page rank, when looking to swap links, although early on, a lot of sites may not be prepared to look at you until you have a page rank above 1 or 2.

The idea is to get on the highest ranked pages of other sites. Usually this is the home page, however this will be difficult early on, so always spend a good couple of hours a week searching for sites that will swap links, and at least start a links page so you can swap links right from the start.

Because marketing is an ongoing process, these methods will become easier over time.

Here is a great method for finding out who your competitors are linking with.

Type in one of your keywords or phrases into either Google, Yahoo or MSN. Jot down the first web site that appears, and then type in the following into the search window - link: www.yourcompetitorswebsite.com

What you should get is a list of sites that are linking back to your competitors site. Some will be from their own site, some will be from rubbish sites, but some will be from directories you may not have found yet, and more importantly, some will be sites that have swapped links with your competitor, meaning you can approach these same sites and ask to swap links with them also.

Another trick is to type the following into the search window - allinanchor: (your keyword phrase) - Do not include the brackets. An example would be allinanchor: fishing rods. What you'll get is a list of sites that the search engine deems as having a good list of links back to their site using the keyword phrase as an anchor. You then try and copy the sites that are up at the top, as it makes sense. Just use the process above to find out where those links are.

Tasks:

1. Find some websites that compliment yours and ask to swap links with them.
2. Start a page just for swapping links with other websites.
3. Research your competitors for links.
