More On Adding Products

If you’re using a web host and e-commerce package, adding products should be a breeze as they will more than likely have a product adding facility which asks you to input several pieces of data, including a picture.

If not, then each product needs a price, a picture, product details and either a ‘buy now’ or ‘add to cart’ button or link. If you don’t have a shopping cart with your package (highly unlikely) then do a search on Google for ‘free shopping cart’ and you’ll find plenty to choose from.

Choosing a price can be a tricky endeavour. Don’t sell yourself short by trying to undercut everybody with cheap prices, but at the same time, remember you have very minimal overheads, so huge profits on every order is not necessary. If the competition to too big, prices will generally be hard to match.

There is no real formula for choosing a retail price. I read somewhere that you ought to be looking at a 300% mark up on every product, which sounds absurd to me, unless of course people are willing to pay that. Test your prices out to see what works. Look at your competitors.

I know that just prior to Christmas the rush for gifts makes it less desirable for shoppers to compare prices so selling at RRP is a little easier, but once the mad rush is over, customers have more time to shop around, so keep this in mind.

Some suppliers will offer a suggested retail price, so if you’re looking to discount, then mentioning the usual RRP as well as your discounted price is a good idea.

Customers will want to see a larger picture of your product, so my suggestion is to make a thumbnail size of approx 90 x 90 pixels to place on your other pages such as your category pages, a 200 x 200 pixel size for your product page and a 400 x 400 pixel picture to use on a separate page. Have a link somewhere near your 200 x 200 picture saying ‘more details’ or ‘see larger picture’ and this can take your customer to the larger 400 x 400 picture.

If you’re offering any free or discounted benefits (such as shipping etc) with your product, make sure to mention it in your product details as well. Very much like the content you used for your home and category pages, and give them a good reason to buy now!

 Tasks:

1. Give each product a price, picture, ‘buy now’ or ‘add to cart’ button, some details and a larger picture link.
